Finding Personal Freedom

I’m Sarah Rugg. Entrepreneur, rebel, fun-loving, freedom seeker. I thought I was happy in the corporate world with my well-paid job for all those years. But it turns out I wasn’t – I actually just didn’t know what else was out there, and just how much fun and freedom I could have. 

Once I had a baby, apparently my brain capacity reduced dramatically – so much so that when I came back from mat leave, the multi-million-pound contracts I used to negotiate were replaced with filing… in a filing room… a very small filing room… with no windows. 

So, I decided no one puts baby in the corner. And the rebel in me was officially out. I’m forever grateful for that demotion, because from that day forward, my life changed. 

Of course, I made every mistake in the book when I set up my Virtual Assistant business back in 2005. I had no support and no one had heard of a VA. The odds were stacked against me. 

But I kept going. I bounced back on days that I didn’t even want to get out of bed. I tried to ignore the naysayers. 

I’ve been called a wasp, a perfectionist, a dog with a bone…. Under this thick skin that I’ve learnt to grow, there’s a sensitive soul who wants to help others gain the freedom that I worked so hard for. I can fast track you to that freedom. It’s my mission. 

You see, I have a real problem with watching people wasting their lives, unhappy in their jobs. 

Life’s too short. 

I’ve already helped over 500 people set up VA businesses in the last few years, and I’ve had amazing feedback like ‘You’ve changed my life’ and ‘Sarah Rugg is one of life’s inspirational people’. 

Wow. Wow. Just Wow! 

I can’t tell you what that means to me. If I died tomorrow, I’d be happy with the difference I’ve made.  

I used to have really low confidence. And while setting up my business in the early days, I was often patronised… and some days I felt that not many people believed in me (some of them my own family and friends).  So of course, I started to doubt myself. As you do. 

But then I had a breakthrough that changed everything. 

I got a mentor. 

Suddenly I didn’t feel on my own anymore. It’s a game-changer when you have someone cheering you on and supporting you on your journey. To know someone has your back boosts your confidence and self-belief massively. 

And my mentor taught me that confidence is a skill. Just as with any other skill, you can learn it. 

I know! This was big news to me too. You can actually learn to be confident?! I LOVE learning, I could’ve been doing this years ago. Where have you been all my life? 

And the rest is history. 

But we all know you can’t stand still. 

I’m a hungry learner. I devour audible books on personal development and business growth. I invest a large sum of money into a business coach and I keep abreast of the latest marketing strategies. After all, how could I possibly mentor people if I’m not staying current, the world moves so fast, you have to keep up. 

My Virtual Assistant business Vi-VA has a team of over 20 people and is still growing. It pretty much runs itself. I also own a companionship business and the same is true of that. I have the freedom to visit my beloved Cornwall when I choose (a monthly trip that is part business, part pleasure – but that project is a story for another day). I can walk my cockapoo Ted when I want, do my Pilates classes, meet friends and family for lunch and enjoy the odd cheeky little afternoon sauvignon in the garden on a sunny day. 

You can see why I’m pleased not to be in that filing room anymore. 

So, if the rebel in you doesn’t want a boss anymore, I get it (if I had one now, I’d get sacked on the first day). If you want the freedom, flexibility and opportunities that come with

How do we protect your information?

We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal information when you place an order or enter, submit, or access your personal information. We offer the use of a secure server. All supplied sensitive/credit information is transmitted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology and then encrypted into our Payment gateway providers database only to be accessible by those authorized with special access rights to such systems, and are required to?keep the information confidential. After a transaction, your private information (credit cards, social security numbers, financials, etc.) will not be kept on file for more than 60 days.

Do we use cookies?

Do we disclose any information to outside parties?

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your personally identifiable information. This does not include trusted third parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or servicing you, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release your information when we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others rights, property, or safety. However, non-personally identifiable visitor information may be provided to other parties for marketing, advertising, or other uses.

Registration

The minimum information we need to register you is your name, email address and a password. We will ask you more questions for different services, including sales promotions. Unless we say otherwise, you have to answer all the registration questions. We may also ask some other, voluntary questions during registration for certain services (for example, professional networks) so we can gain a clearer understanding of who you are. This also allows us to personalise services for you. To assist us in our marketing, in addition to the data that you provide to us if you register, we may also obtain data from trusted third parties to help us understand what you might be interested in. This ‘profiling’ information is produced from a variety of sources, including publicly available data (such as the electoral roll) or from sources such as surveys and polls where you have given your permission for your data to be shared. You can choose not to have such data shared with the Guardian from these sources by logging into your account and changing the settings in the privacy section. After you have registered, and with your permission, we may send you emails we think may interest you. Newsletters may be personalised based on what you have been reading on theguardian.com. At any time you can decide not to receive these emails and will be able to ‘unsubscribe’. Logging in using social networking credentials If you log-in to our sites using a Facebook log-in, you are granting permission to Facebook to share your user details with us. This will include your name, email address, date of birth and location which will then be used to form a Guardian identity. You can also use your picture from Facebook as part of your profile. This will also allow us and Facebook to share your, networks, user ID and any other information you choose to share according to your Facebook account settings. If you remove the Guardian app from your Facebook settings, we will no longer have access to this information. If you log-in to our sites using a Google log-in, you grant permission to Google to share your user details with us. This will include your name, email address, date of birth, sex and location which we will then use to form a Guardian identity. You may use your picture from Google as part of your profile. This also allows us to share your networks, user ID and any other information you choose to share according to your Google account settings. If you remove the Guardian from your Google settings, we will no longer have access to this information. If you log-in to our sites using a twitter log-in, we receive your avatar (the small picture that appears next to your tweets) and twitter username.

Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act Compliance

We are in compliance with the requirements of COPPA (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act), we do not collect any information from anyone under 13 years of age. Our website, products and services are all directed to people who are at least 13 years old or older.

Updating your personal information

We offer a ‘My details’ page (also known as Dashboard), where you can update your personal information at any time, and change your marketing preferences. You can get to this page from most pages on the site – simply click on the ‘My details’ link at the top of the screen when you are signed in.
