You’ve made the move to flexible working, but what if you could take it one step further? No commute. No dress code. A bit more breathing space between meetings. Maybe you even get to pick your kids up from school or sneak in a lunchtime walk. But being your own boss takes this freedom to the next level – and that’s where the real opportunity lies.

Because even with the perks of home-based employment, you’re still playing by someone else’s rules. You still answer to a manager. You still need to ask before taking time off. You’re still clocking in, even if it’s virtually. And your earning potential? Still capped by someone else’s pay scale.

That’s not real freedom.

The True Freedom of Being Your Own Boss

Being your own boss is where true freedom lies. It means you’re in charge of your time, energy, and income. You don’t have to ask for permission – you make the decisions. Whether it’s taking a last-minute day off or letting go of a client who isn’t a good fit, you control your calendar.

When you’re working for yourself, you create the rules based on what works best for your life. The flexibility you have as an employee simply can’t compare to the autonomy of self-employment.

The Difference Between Flexibility and Autonomy

There’s a big difference between flexibility and autonomy – and if you’re feeling frustrated in your current role, even with the all the benefits of Homebase working, it’s probably because you’re craving the latter.

Being your own boss allows you to make choices based on your priorities. Need a day off at short notice? You decide. Fed up with a client who drains your time and energy? You let them go. Sitting through a meeting that’s going nowhere? You can steer it back on track or wrap it up politely when it’s no longer worth your time.

There’s no need to ask for permission because you’re the one calling the shots.

Real freedom also means building a life that fits around what matters most to you. Want to start later so you can walk your dog or go to the gym? Do it. Prefer to work evenings so your daytime’s more flexible? That’s fine too. Fancy working from a cabin in the Lake District or a beach in Portugal? As long as you’ve got Wi-Fi, you’re good to go.

Building a Life That Works for You

At My VA Business, we’ve helped hundreds of people make the shift – often from a corporate background or a home-based job that looked great on paper, but felt restrictive in practice. They had the skills. They just needed the structure and support to use them in a way that worked for them, not for a line manager.

The thing we hear most from our members after starting their own business is “I wish I’d done this sooner.”

The Real Value of Self-Employment

Because what they gained wasn’t just time or money, it was ownership. Over their calendars, their client list, their workload and their lifestyle.

That doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Going out on your own takes guts. But the risk is far smaller when you’ve got a clear, proven path to follow. That’s what our FAB-VA Programme is built on – experienced, honest guidance and step-by-step support.

You Don’t Need Permission to Want More

So if you’re in a job that gives you some flexibility but still leaves you feeling boxed in, we get it.

Flexible employment can take the edge off burnout, but it rarely gives you the space to actually breathe. You’re still showing up for someone else’s priorities. Still trading your time for a fixed salary. Still limited by rules you didn’t write.

Start Taking Control of Your Future

Being your own boss is about more than just working from home. It’s about having the power to shape your life exactly the way you want it. If you’re tired of feeling restricted by someone else’s timetable, you can create your own path – one that puts you in charge of your work and your life.

So don’t wait for the perfect time, the next promotion, or someone else’s green light. If you want real freedom, you have to claim it.

If you’re ready to see what being your own boss could look like, start by watching our free webinar. It’s designed to show you exactly what’s involved in setting up a VA business, finding clients and creating a flexible lifestyle that you control.

When I first started my own VA business, all I knew was that I wanted more freedom and flexibility in my life. Like My VA Business founder, Sarah, I’d just had my second child and I found that going back to my office job just didn’t make financial sense. I would actually have been paying to go to work!

The thought of starting my own business didn’t really occur to me and in all honesty, I kind of fell into it. But what I didn’t realise back then was just how much I would come to love this way of working.

For me, being a Virtual Assistant has been about so much more than just working from home. It’s given me the chance to build a business that works around my family, my lifestyle and even my dogs.

Here are the things I love most about being a VA – and why you might love it too.

Family Comes First

I’ve got three kids, all at different ages and stages of education. Being there for them was always important to me, and working for myself has allowed me to do that.

I still do the school pick-ups for my youngest, stand on the football pitch for my son and watch all my oldest daughters degree performances and exhibitions. I can be around when they need me, and I don’t have to miss the little (or big) moments. That flexibility is priceless, and it’s one of the biggest reasons I’m so grateful I made this choice.

I also have two dogs at home, and I love that I don’t have to leave them for hours every day. Working from home means they’ve got company, and I can take them out for walks when it suits me. It might sound like a small thing, but it makes such a big difference to my day.

Working for Myself, But Never Alone

One of the things I was worried about when I started out was whether I’d feel isolated working on my own. But actually, it’s been the complete opposite.

I’ve had the chance to work alongside some amazing VAs, freelancers, self employed contractors and of course, the lovely My VA Business team. Even though we all run our own businesses, there’s a real sense of teamwork and community. It feels like I’ve got colleagues, without the office politics!

Clients Who Truly Appreciate What I Do

Another thing I love? My clients.

I get to work with interesting, inspiring business owners who genuinely value the support I provide. They say thank you, they appreciate the lengths I go to, and I can actually see the impact I’m having. That sense of appreciation and purpose is something I sadly never really felt in many of my old roles.

Always Learning Something New

This journey has been a massive learning curve – in the best possible way.

I’m now way more tech-savvy than I used to be. I love finding new tools, apps and systems that streamline processes, save time and boost productivity – both for me and my clients.

Running a VA business keeps me constantly learning and growing, and that’s something I really thrive on.

How I’ve Changed Over the Years

When I first started, my main focus was copywriting. I’d spent years writing, it was what I knew.

Over time, I discovered I loved the admin side of things more. Helping clients organise, streamline and make their businesses run smoothly was where I excelled.

One of the things I’m grateful for about being a VA is that my business can change with me. As my interests, skills and life circumstances evolve, so can the work I do and the services I offer. It’s a career that grows with me, not one I have to fit into.

Confidence: Finding Strength I Didn’t Know I Had

I’ll be honest – starting out was scary. Why would anyone want to hire me? Would anyone pay me? I was petrified about networking and having to prove I was good at what I did.

I still wouldn’t say I’m the most confident person in the world, but growing my business over the years has opened my eyes to my strengths. I’ve learned how strong I can be when I need to be, and that confidence – even if it’s quiet – is one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.

In Control of My Income

One of the things I really appreciate about running my VA business is being in charge of my own income.

Right now, I’m really happy working part-time hours. I earn enough to have money for holidays and little treats for the family – and that feels just right for me. But what’s great is knowing that if I ever wanted to, I could ramp things up, take on more hours, and bring in more income.

That sense of choice and flexibility is so different from being in a salaried role. It’s empowering to know the control is in my hands.

Why Become a Virtual Assistant…

For me, being a VA ticks all the boxes: flexibility, freedom, fulfilment and the chance to do work I actually enjoy.

It’s not always easy – like any business, it takes effort to get started and keep going. But the rewards are huge.

If you’ve ever thought about becoming a VA, I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. And with the right support, there’s no reason you can’t create this kind of life for yourself too.

Fresh start moments are the best.

You know that feeling you get on January 1st? You wake up with big ideas.

Clean slate. New goals. Big dreams.

But let’s be honest, January isn’t the only time of year that can give you that excitement of something new. And frankly, it isn’t always the best time. Let’s not forget those cold, dark mornings and post-Christmas overwhelm.

The good news is that your “new year energy” doesn’t have to be tied to a date on the calendar. Psychologists have found that we’re naturally more motivated to start something new when we reach a mental milestone – what they call a Fresh Start Moment.

It’s when your brain says, “OK, new chapter. Let’s do this.”

And if you’ve been thinking about starting your own VA business, but waiting for the stars to align, these fresh start moments could be exactly the inspiration you need.

What is a Fresh Start Moment?

In truth, it’s any day that feels like a new beginning — even if it’s meaning is only obvious to you. Research shows that starting something at the beginning (of a week, month or personal milestone) boosts motivation, follow-through and long-term success.

That feeling of a new beginning helps you draw a line in the sand. That was then. This is now.

And that tiny shift in mindset can lead to huge changes in your life and work.

So instead of waiting for January 1st, what if you found your perfect moment and started building the flexible, fulfilling business you’ve been dreaming of?

Let’s take a look at 12 powerful fresh start moments you can claim as your own:

1. The First of the Month

There’s a reason planners and goal-setters love the 1st. It’s a natural reset. Time to look ahead, draw up a plan and make something real happen. No pressure. Just possibility.

2. Your Birthday

It’s your own personal new year. A beautiful moment to reflect on where you’ve been, and decide where you want to go next. Starting your VA business around your birthday makes it feel even more meaningful.

3. Back to School (September)

September is a golden fresh start. Life settles, kids return to school and structure returns. It’s also the time when we naturally reflect and refocus, which makes it perfect for laying the foundations of your new business.

Spring brings energy. Summer gives you space. Autumn feels organised. Winter is thoughtful and inward-looking. Each season has its own rhythm and its own kind of power. Start your business in a season that matches your mindset.

Tiny fresh starts, every week. Mondays get a bad rap, but they’re actually a blank page. Perfect for setting mini-goals, taking small actions and building the business you want one step at a time.

For the wellness-inclined, a new moon is a symbol of fresh energy and new intentions. You don’t need to be spiritual to appreciate the ritual of a clean slate – it’s just a moment to pause, reflect and act.

Whether it’s a summer getaway or a simple weekend off, time away gives us perspective. You come back with clarity and energy, and that’s the perfect moment to commit to something new.

8. Starting or Leaving a Job

Big transitions can feel scary, but they’re often the start of something brilliant. If you’ve recently left (or are planning to leave) a job, this is your cue to build something that works for you. Flexible. Fulfilling. Yours.

9. Anniversary of a Life Event

Whether it’s a loss, a milestone or a life-changing moment, anniversaries give us a chance to reflect and redirect. Many of our members turn difficult anniversaries into empowering fresh starts. You can too.

A new rhythm, new routines. And a new opportunity to focus on you. This moment can be both emotional and exciting, and it’s often the perfect time to rediscover your purpose and passions.

Boxing Day onwards is a strange little space. It can be quiet, reflective and perfect for planning. Before the new year chaos kicks in, there’s a little pocket of calm. Use it to get clear, get confident, and take the first steps.

This one might be the most powerful of all. Because you decide. No waiting, no external milestone. Just you, drawing a line in the sand and saying: “This is when I start.”

Your fresh start moment doesn’t need to be flashy. It just needs to be yours.

No, you don’t need to have it all figured out. And no, you don’t need to feel 100% ready.
You just need a little spark – and support from someone who’s been there.

That’s exactly what the FAB-VA Programme is for.
It’s packed with expert advice, tools, templates, legal docs, branding help and step-by-step guidance from someone who knows the path (because she’s walked it).

Pick your moment.
Make it matter.
And if you want some support, we’re ready when you are.

Have you ever felt that subtle pull, deep in your gut. Or maybe a quiet voice in the back of your mind, hinting that you’re capable of more? That somewhere, somehow, there’s a reality where the power of belief means you are living the best version of yourself and doing exactly what you were meant to do, because you finally gave yourself a chance… you finally chose you.

Is it really just all in your head?

As Tony Robbins says: “if you can’t, you must. If you must, you can.”

And that’s the thing about beliefs; they can either empower us or hold us back.

Take starting your own VA business for example; it’s so easy to fall into the trap of limiting our potential when we’re fighting against assumptions or maybe even past experiences.

But what if we chose to believe differently?

The power of belief

Nobody believed that humans were ever meant to fly; but the Wright brothers did.

Despite peer and expert opinions that it couldn’t be done, they always believed differently. They chose not to be held back by what others thought of, or saw, as impossible.

They persisted, experimented, tried and tried again. And finally, they defied all odds by achieving the first powered flight. Their power of belief meant that was once impossible became the starting point for pioneers in aviation.

Your time to fly…

Your ideas and beliefs might not necessarily be to create something pioneering, inspiring change across the world.

But what if you could create positive change in your world? Would that be so bad?

What if you believed that you could be our own boss; start your virtual assistant company; change your career path; choose to step away from traditional expectations or norms?

What if you believed in yourself and all the wonderful skills and experience you bring to the table?

Are your goals and dreams truly that unobtainable, or is that just the running commentary you’ve told yourself over time?

Your beliefs are the lens through which you view the world.

And the most beautiful thing about this lens is that it’s not fixed. You can choose to alter it at any time.

The question is: Will you?

(If you’re ready to find out, why not watch our free webinar class and see whether starting your own VA business is really for you. Book your session here.)

Most of us have a certain time of year when we feel that spark – that undeniable urge to set big, bold goals.

For me, it’s New Year’s. The promise of a fresh slate and the excitement of dreaming up plans for the months ahead has me plotting far-reaching ideas for how the year might unfold.

For others, it might be September, harking back to the crisp new notebooks, polished shoes, and the anticipation of a school year brimming with opportunities and knowledge.

Whichever it is for you, you know that clarity, drive and sense of ambition that comes with a fresh start – ready to break old habits and aim higher than ever before.

But here’s the real question: How do you sustain that drive all year long, avoiding the trap of fizzling out before you’ve reached your goals?

The Secret to Year-Round Success: Mini Goals

Why the fixation on setting goals just once a year?

Imagine bottling that zest for change and turning it into a series of mini goals throughout the year. It’s time to reframe resolutions – not as something reserved for January, but as an ongoing process, a cycle of refreshing and renewing your commitments.

Instead of the all-or-nothing pressure of “one chance to get it right,” think of this approach as your secret weapon to stay productive, focused and flexible. And guess what? That means the momentum never runs dry.

Here’s How to Start Your All-Year Resolutions Revolution

Ready to shake things up? Let’s map out a simple, step-by-step framework to turn your grand ideas into bite-sized, achievable goals – ones you can tweak and fine-tune as you go. The key is consistency and flexibility – keeping the fire alive all year, without the burnout.

Step 1: Quarterly Check-ins – The Power of the Recurring Strategy Session

Set up a recurring quarterly strategy session. These sessions are your chance to dream, reassess and adjust. Think of it as pressing the refresh button – this isn’t just about reviewing what’s happened so far; it’s about bringing that new-year excitement into every quarter.

Step 2: Break It Down – Mini Goals, Mega Impact

The magic of mini goals lies in their bite-sized brilliance. Tackle your big ambitions in small, manageable steps. Don’t try to do everything at once – that’s the surest path to feeling overwhelmed. Break your resolutions into mini goals that align with your quarterly sessions.

With each step achieved, you’ll build momentum, like a snowball rolling downhill!

Step 3: Set Monthly Targets – and Actually Schedule Time for Them

Here’s the crucial bit: make it real by giving each mini goal a deadline.

Set monthly targets that feed into your larger objectives, then block out dedicated time in your calendar to work on them. Imagine these time blocks as sacred appointments with your future self – non-negotiable and laser-focused.

Step 4: Use Your Quarterly Sessions to Reflect and Tweak

At each quarterly check-in, take time to celebrate your wins and reflect on what still needs attention. Use these moments to recalibrate: What’s working? What needs tweaking?

It’s about progress, not perfection. The more you reassess, the more adaptable you become, ensuring your goals evolve as you do.

Why This Works

Think about how productive you are before a holiday – the deadline effect kicks in, and you’re powering through tasks with superhuman efficiency. Now imagine tapping into that energy all year round. With mini goals and regular check-ins, you’ll create that same sense of urgency and clarity, but without the pressure of cramming everything into one New Year resolution.

The results? They’ll be off the scale.

Because with a little planning and structure, you’ll find your productivity soaring.

I often get asked about how my day runs and how I manage to get so much done. Well, here’s my secret – it’s all down to my morning routine.

I’m not a natural morning person – in fact, for years I stayed up working into the early hours of the morning, convinced I was being my most productive after hours. So I never had a great morning routine.

Until recently.

I’ll be honest, introducing a morning routine wasn’t easy for me – in fact it wasn’t until the third time I read Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod that I finally managed to make a habit out of my morning routine.

When I read this book again recently, I still resonated with it just as much as I did the first couple of times. But this time something was different – something really clicked.

Was it that my head was in a different place? My natural body clock had changed? Or maybe my brain just needed to absorb the concept multiple times before it sank in… who knows.

Whatever it was, it revived my vision of being awake to watch the sun rise, hear the birds starting to tweet and enjoy the bliss of the morning stillness before everyone in the house awoke. There was just something about having prepared for the day and boxed off my exercise before the kids alarm clocks had even rung… a cheeky little smugness that I’d never experienced before. It’s a feeling that’s really hard to describe – almost like I was winning at life.

But I didn’t get to this point overnight – it took me a year to tweak my routine and a lot of time reading too.

Another book I found really useful was Atomic Habits by James Clear. Again, I’d read it before but this time it created a powerful duo with Miracle Morning that seemed to hit the spot for me. Enough to make me seriously implement – and maintain – a morning routine for the first time ever!

James Clear talks about the common misconception that a new habit only takes 21 days – the reality is that it takes 66 days. If I think back now, I can see that in the past I thought it would happen quickly and then felt a failure when it didn’t. Sticking with the process has definitely been a game changer for me.

So, what does my morning routine look like?

I am up and dressed at 6am – (this is honestly a massive change for me – the amusing exclamation of ‘WTF’ from my best friend shows this sort of thing is highly out of character!)

Then I’ll find a quiet space for my meditation.

Time for gratitude – acknowledge three things I’m grateful for today (there’s always something to be grateful for, even on a really bad day).

Practice affirmations and visualisation, then set my intentions for the day.

Full body stretch (in the form of Sun Salutations) and a quick weight workout.

Finally a 5k morning walk before I start work at 8.30am – I do this with a friend. Like many things in life, when there’s someone else to answer to, it’s more likely to happen.

Why such a structured morning?

Without this routine, I honestly don’t believe I would have achieved my dream of a house by the sea. The belief, clarity and feeling of being centred that my morning routine gave me, drove me to achieve something I never thought possible. The house was a massive renovation project and my morning routine was a massive part of me realising my dream – it’s such a critical part of my focus.

But it’s not just for the big dreams – this time in the morning for me is also about building in time for the things I need to do (and often forget) each day for self-care – from taking medication and doing physio exercises to applying a good face cream and enjoying a glass of lemon water or a smoothie. Just build it into your morning routine and you’ll know it will get done!

So what are the benefits?

If I said that having a morning routine could increase your:

focus

clarity

gratitude

productivity

You’ll see why it can have such a beneficial effect on your business!

Taking time to complete the routine really does set you up for the day – whether it’s the focus on what you need to achieve (such as converting a client or finishing a report), gratitude for what you have and are achieving, or the increased productivity that comes when you stop procrastinating and have a clear vision of what your days should include.

For me, being forced to go to bed earlier and increase the amount of sleep I’m getting, to the buzz (and serotonin boost) I feel having achieved so much by 8.30am each day, it’s really transformed my wellbeing, as well as my ability to grow the business.

Do I ever give the morning routine a miss? Hell yeah. I’m far from Little Miss Perfect. Occasionally if I’m tired, under the weather or worse for wear I skip it. But I try to get back on it the next day; I’m all too aware how rapidly that motivation can disappear.

And with research showing that habits save energy, wouldn’t you prefer to channel your resources into the things you love, like your work and your family?

Give your own morning routine at try. And believe me when I say, if I can do it anyone can.

Over the years I’ve carried out a lot of research about entrepreneurial business owners. The one thing that stands out above all others was the shared mindset that successful people have.

But what if you’re not quite there yet? Is it possible to create a winning mindset and help yourself achieve the same successes? Absolutely! Here are my 10 top tips to help you on your way:

1.Believe that anything is possible

I was lucky enough to have a grandmother who drummed into me from a very young age ‘there’s no such word as can’t’ and I fully subscribe to Henry Ford’s belief that ‘whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right’. It might take hard work but I truly believe anything is possible, and it’s the people who bounce back from the bad days and keep going who really achieve great things.

Right now, all around the world, there are people achieving things that nobody thought possible – from large-scale technological advances and medical breakthroughs to successful small businesses and personal milestones. The one thing they have in common is that they all believed they could – and with a simple mindset shift, you can join them.

2. Have a purpose

It’s amazing what you can achieve – and say no to – when you have a purpose.

Having absolute clarity about your purpose is a game changer. Once you know what you’re here for, it’s very easy to cut out everything that doesn’t align with your purpose. If you don’t know your purpose, you’re in danger of making vague decisions and getting side-tracked by others wasting your valuable time.

Once you have a clear purpose, everything just falls into place. With a laser focus on what you’re on this planet to do, you suddenly find planning your day becomes easier – you’re able to prioritise without doubting yourself and you start making smart decisions that align with your purpose.

3. Have a Vision

Having a crystal clear vision is all about where you see yourself in say 5 or 10 years’ time. And when I say ‘see’ I really mean ‘see’ – creating a picture in your mind and visualising exactly what you’ll be doing, whether that’s building a VA team so you can work 10 hours a week and spend more time with your kids or working nomadically around the world.

There are only two rules for your vision:

It must excite you.

Don’t just see it – feel it!

On a daily basis take time to remind yourself exactly how it will feel when you achieve it – close your eyes and visualise sitting on that beach, being there for your kids, or whatever your vision is. Really feel it. If you’re doing it right, it should bring up emotions. If it doesn’t, then maybe you don’t believe it can happen.

4. Grow a thick skin

It’s a sad fact but there will always be those who try to sabotage your business dreams – sometimes it will be friends and family and other times strangers. If you’re already having a wobble, it won’t take much for a few unsupportive comments to turn that into a major crisis of confidence in yourself.

Many don’t mean to have this impact of course… but whether it’s their misguided attempts to look out for you or their own limiting beliefs, the fact is that you do really need to grow a thick skin and start ignoring anyone who isn’t on board with your purpose and vision.

Keep your focus and rise above it!

5. Surround yourself with people who lift you up

Now’s the time to have an honest look around at your circle of friends and ask yourself one simple question – do they lift you up or drag you down? It might sound ruthless but you probably need a cull of all those who are holding you back with their own limiting beliefs.

And if it’s family or people you can’t avoid? Create a distance and decide to focus on those who can help you learn and thrive instead. Finding like-minded people is a real eye-opener – surrounding yourself with people who understand and can help you achieve your vision will spur you on to success!

6. Set goals and review them regularly

Now let’s talk about goals. These are not to be confused with your vision or purpose, although they should feed into both of these. Setting goals as a business owner possibly sounds a bit basic and obvious – but you’d be amazed how many people don’t set themselves any goals at all (if you’re someone who struggles with this, a coach or mentor who holds you accountable could be the answer!)

Having really clear goals that you set for the year and review monthly, quarterly and annually really underpins success. A study by Dr. Gail Matthews of the Dominican University of California found that you’re 42% more likely to achieve goals simply by writing them down!

7. Say No more

Once you have your purpose, vision and goals nailed, it suddenly becomes much easier to say no to anything and everything that doesn’t align with them. It might take practice if you’re not used to it but remember, your time is valuable and it’s not rude to say no – it’s your choice. It’s amazing how easy it is to say no if you do it with a smile!

And if you do slip up and say yes without thinking, you don’t have to go through with it! Make it your practice to review your diary each week for the coming week – this will pick up anything that you shouldn’t have said yes to, giving you time to cancel and focus on what you need to be doing.

8. Take time out

It can be hard to take time away from the day to day demands of your business but it really does pay dividends. Protecting a regular time slot, whether that’s weekly or every couple of weeks, and finding a happy place to relax can really help you think about where your business is going.

It might be going for a walk in nature or like me, finding somewhere overlooking water, you’ll find yourself refreshed and having your best ideas – whether that’s about growing your business, how you want the next year to go or plans for your next marketing campaign.

9. Read like mad

I’m a massive fan of reading, learning and growing and truly believe it can change your motivation and business trajectory. There are so many amazing books to read or listen to on Audible, and I’ve even created a members’ list in the My VA Business Hub which details all my favourite reads and those of my business coach too – ones that have really changed our lives.

I can definitely see the difference in my own businesses when I’m actively listening to Audible and when I’m not. When I’m listening to books on Audible regularly – I know I achieve more in my business because I’m more motivated and inspired. When I’m not able to listen as much there is dip both in my business growth and personal growth.

10. Let your creative side roll

If your initial response is to say you’re not creative, you’re wrong. We all have a creative side – don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! You may recognise yours as problem solving, imagination, a flair for writing, quick wit, enterprise, initiative, intuition, taking risks. Creativity comes in many different forms. Everyone has the capacity to be creative in their business. You just need to tap into it.

The average three year old can draw better than me, so I labelled myself as not creative in the slightest. Yet when I was deeply unhappy, trapped in a corporate role that I couldn’t afford to leave, against all odds I found a way. That’s creativity.

Another reason to remind you of the importance of having time out and creating headspace – it’s the perfect opportunity to let your creative juices flow.

So that’s my top ten tips to help you gain the entrepreneurial mindset I believe is the key to a successful VA business. If you’d like our support on your journey to creating a flexible VA business, check out our FAB-VA programme or get in touch to find out more.

It’s easy to find out the things you have to do when setting up as a virtual assistant – from registering with HMRC to getting insurance and more – but what are the real additional considerations that only experienced VAs know? Here are 6 invaluable things to consider as you start your VA journey:

1 – Boundaries

If you’ve always worked in a corporate setting before, you might not have thought about setting boundaries for working at home, but this is vital if you want to preserve your working hours, and your sanity.

You’ll be amazed how family and friends think it’s fine to pop in, ask for lifts and expect you to run errands just because you’re based at home. Stand firm from day one on this – otherwise you’ll find yourself getting frustrated with your nearest and dearest and working in your personal time to catch up.

2 – Creating an elevator pitch for social events

Forget your networking pitch for a second and create one for social events (that you can even remember after a couple glasses of wine!) If you can tell family and friends in a couple of clear sentences what you do and who you do it for, they’re likely to know someone who needs your services and will tell them all about you.

Referrals from family and friends are a really proven way to grow your client base, so next time you’re invited to a wedding or party, go prepared and see how a more subtle social pitch can really pay off.

3 – A love of variety

If you’re someone who loves repetitive, mundane tasks and every day to be the same, I’m sorry to break it to you but this industry isn’t for you. Working as a VA is never dull and two days are rarely the same, so it makes for a really varied and interesting work life.

Being adaptable, enjoying meeting new people, having a positive attitude and learning as you go are things you’ll need to love – if that sounds like you, you’ve already got the qualities you’ll need to succeed as a VA.

4 – Not needing as much as you think

If you’re holding back from starting your VA business as you think you’ll need to invest loads of money on equipment, think again. Most people already have a computer and phone, and nowadays you can even get away without having a printer!

Now don’t get me wrong, there are certain key things from a legal point of view you do have to do but you need very little else. In fact, you don’t even need an office – despite the growth of my businesses, I still work at my kitchen table as I’ve always done.

5 – Finding your balance

If you’ve left the corporate world, you’re probably used to fitting your personal life around your work life, yet now you can flip this so you’re fitting your work life around your personal commitments.

If you’re looking for a rigid schedule, life as a VA may not suit you that well. It’s a massive mindset shift – finding your own balance and appreciating the flexibility to choose your hours, while remembering you still need to keep your clients happy!

6 – Getting processes in place from day one

For some people it’s a given that they’ll create processes for their business from the start but for many, it doesn’t even occur to them that they might need someone to take over suddenly if they become ill or have an emergency.

If you need to, could you step out of your business tomorrow, safe in the knowledge that all your internal and client work could be covered in full? If not, you need to be creating processes that anyone can follow – I recommend this book as a great read to help you systemise your VA business.

Had you considered any of the above? If not, I hope that list proves useful as you create your own successful VA business. Let me know at sarah@myvabusiness.co.uk if you have any other tips you’d like to share!

It’s so easy to just keep going along the same path, isn’t it?

You’ve spent years building your career – putting up with the stress, the long hours, and the office politics so long that you almost don’t notice them anymore.

And you’re a success – you’ve got the title, reached the goal, and proved you can do it. You’ve worked your way up, paid your dues and should be reaping the rewards.

Yet as mid-life approaches, I’m seeing more and more people who just feel flat.

Their life isn’t terrible but it isn’t wowing them either. They’re consumed by the daily drudge, exhausted in their free time, and beginning to realise the corporate dream isn’t all it was sold to be.

They’re struggling to balance the needs of their kids, parents, and squeeze in a bit of down time somewhere along the line too.

They’re looking for more meaning, a purpose, and a chance to make a mark on the world before it’s too late.

And I’m a great believer that it’s never too late.

So many people tend to write themselves off as they approach middle age, yet it’s a great time to take stock and see what’s really important in your life.

Whether that’s spending more time with the people you love, giving something back to society, discovering new interests or finding a renewed sense of purpose.

I’ve met a lot of people wrestling with these issues but then seen many sadly return to the well worn groove they’ve made for themselves.

Maybe it’s a sense of comfort in the ordinary or a fear of failure but it just seems a real shame that they didn’t give themselves another chance to shine.

I do appreciate it can seem daunting to step out of the day to day and really shake things up. Yet it really is possible if you get the right guide or a roadmap to show you how to make things happen.

I’m all about empowering career changers who want more out of life but want that added security of expert guidance to make sure they really do succeed.

With our programmes, we guide you through all the requirements of setting up a business so there aren’t any of those nagging doubts that you’ve missed something important or costly.

And we teach you what works and what doesn’t. I’ve run my businesses since 2005 and I made plenty of mistakes in the early days that you can easily avoid!

Finally, we show you how to really start living a satisfying life again with a fully flexible and rewarding lifestyle – and it’s not one that’s unachievable, as I’m living it myself.

I just can’t imagine how I’d feel now if I was still stuck in my old corporate banking role. I’m so thankful that I was able to step out of it to set up my own businesses, which give me the flexibility to focus on everything that’s important in my life.

And the older I get, the more I see the importance of doing something I love – nothing compares to the feeling of jumping out of bed, excited to start each day.

So, I really can’t stress the importance of listening to your gut feeling and investigating other ways forward at this age – you’ve got a lot more living to do yet, so make sure it counts!

If you’re ready to start living again, take a look at my webinar. It explains a bit more about what your life could look like as the owner of a virtual assistant business, as well as giving you a few tips.

The Easy Route

Don’t get me wrong – I can see the appeal of a franchise to someone starting out who just wants to set up their virtual assistant business and get going. After all, if you’re new to the VA world and looking for virtual assistant training, a franchise promises all this and more.

You don’t need to spend hours worrying about logos and names as you’ll be buying into an established brand, and you can hit the ground running with support and in house virtual assistant training.

If you’re feeling uncertain about your own abilities or you’re facing disapproval from your nearest and dearest about giving up your job and taking a new direction, it can seem an easy route to mitigating some of the risk.

Is the cost too high?

In another blog post, I warned that cheap virtual assistant training is often a false economy – it’s too generic, often not UK specific and leaves you wide open to legal and compliance issues that you aren’t taught about.

Yet there are just as many issues with paying high franchise costs.

From the upfront franchise fee to ongoing loyalty payments and strict contracts that tie you into their suppliers, it can start to seem as if the only person making any money from your hard work is the franchise company itself.

Do you really want to face months of hard work just to break even after such high upfront costs and then face the prospect of paying a percentage of your profits to them each month once you start to succeed?

There are other methods of virtual assistant training that can give you just as much support, without chaining you to such a large financial burden.

Who is in control?

And it’s not just the monetary cost.

If the point of working for yourself is to regain control and flexibility in your working life, the cost of jumping to someone else’s tune can make you feel you’re back to square one.

And while not every franchise is the same, the numerous stories of strict regulations and conflict with the franchise company might make you wonder if you’d be better off just staying in the corporate world.

It certainly doesn’t sound appealing to me compared to the freedom you have with our FAB-VA Programme!

We designed our virtual assistant training to help you develop a business that suits you and your lifestyle – not trying to mould you to fit a generic formula where you have no say in how things are done.

Invest your money and time wisely

The key lesson here is to really do your research when you’re looking at the best route for you. Check your trainer has extensive experience, is still working in the UK VA industry so they’re up to date with the latest issues, and make sure you aren’t signing over creative or financial control to anyone else.

If you’re doing the hard work, you should be receiving the benefits!

With our step by step FAB-VA programme, you’ll receive virtual assistant training approved by the Society of Virtual Assistants so you can be sure you’re benefitting from our experience and knowledge of the UK VA market.

And most importantly, the success is all yours – we’ll teach you how to develop and grow your business, then enjoy watching you flourish. Read more here if that sounds like a no brainer to you too!
